The Mini Farm
I am a hobby breeder located in north Louisiana.  When I found my first little piglet, it was love at first sight.  If you have ever owned a Pot Bellied Pig, you know what wonderful pets they make.  With proper training a pet potbelly can be gentle in nature, clean, and surprisingly intelligent.  Pigs can have the intelligence of a three year old child!  Potbellies are a life time of love as some have lived as long as 23 years.

Important Info
If you are looking to buy and own a pet potbellied piglet.  Be sure to research as much about mini pigs as possible.  Check the zoning laws in your area.  You can go to your city hall or local animal shelter to get this information.  Also you can check online.  Some city's and neborhoods have restrictions on pet pigs.  Pot Bellied Pigs can be classified as livestock, exotic pets or wildlife.  If you live in an apartment or a small home with no yard, a potbellied pig is most likely not for you.  Potbelly's need a little time to walk around outside and graze.  Grazing is essential to a pot bellied pigs diet.  Expect rooting.  His blankets or the patch of dirt in your yard you it does not matter. Your piglet is going to root it.  It's natural and healthy for the pig.  Pigs get iron and other nutrents from dirt especially your young baby piglet.

Weight/Size
When compared in size to the average pig, the potbellied pig is very small.  A true mini pig.  All Vietnamese potbellied pigs are miniature pigs because of there size in comparison to other swine.  Some hogs will grow over 1000 pounds.  Generaly a healthy Vietnamese potbellied pig will be anywhere from 30 to 175 pounds depending on the breed and genetics.  An obese pig can be up to 200 pounds.  The ideal pig in my opinion will weigh 50 to 60 pounds.  The average pot bellied pig weighs 100lbs.  They will all keep growing until they are three to five years of age.  It's not always easy to tell their weight because of the density of their bodies.  Please do not ask exactly what the piglets will weigh.  Its impossible to tell.  They are all different.  I can tell you all my piglets are medium in size.  From 50 to 75 pounds.  Proper feeding is also a huge factor.  Potbelly's can easily become obese.

Trip To The Veterinarian

I will have all my piglets wormed and given vaccinations.  All potbellied pigs must be wormed!  Vaccinations vary depending on location.  You will need to find a veterinarian to continue care for your piglet.  I do not require you to get your piglet spayed or neutered but unless your breeding it's highly recommended.  Males that are not neutered grow large tusks.  Rarely males will grow tusks even when neutered.  In this instance you will need to have a veterinarian trim the tusks.  Also boys can carry a musky odor.  Neutering your male piglet will usually remedy this.  A piglet can be neutered after 2 weeks of age.  Be sure your veterinarian is well experienced with potbellied pigs.
